Have you ever had a brilliant idea only to find yourself procrastinating the next day?
Or perhaps you’ve been dreaming of building an Instagram following, yet you can’t seem to figure out how to begin. These are classic signs of being “stuck.”
Getting stuck can happen to anyone, in any area of life—whether it’s business, relationships, fitness, or personal growth. It manifests differently for everyone, but the common thread is often feelings of resistance: unshakable fatigue, a lack of motivation, or even physical symptoms like illness without clear cause.
You might experience intrusive thoughts telling you that you’re not capable, don’t deserve success, or aren’t worthy of achieving your goals—or you may simply feel immobilized without knowing why.
If you’re on a journey to 10x your life, make a quantum leap, or achieve other big ambitions, this feeling is bound to arise repeatedly. The key is recognizing it, understanding why it happens, and having strategies to move through it.
The good news?
Feeling stuck is a normal, common experience, and you’re not alone.
Better yet, solutions exist to help you break free. In this article, I’ll share insights into why you feel stuck, the subconscious forces at play, and the actionable steps that helped me—and can help you, too.

The Science of Being Stuck: What’s Really Happening in Your Brain
Feeling stuck isn’t just a mental state—it’s deeply rooted in your brain’s design. Our brains prioritize efficiency and safety, which often leads to repeating patterns, even when they’re unhelpful.
At the heart of this issue is your subconscious mind, which governs about 95% of your daily thoughts and actions. Operating on autopilot, your subconscious relies on established neural pathways—habitual "shortcuts" your brain uses to save energy. Think of these pathways as well-worn trails: familiar, but often restrictive.
The Reticular Activating System (RAS), your brain’s filter, reinforces this by prioritizing information that aligns with your existing beliefs. If you’ve told yourself, “I can’t do this,” your RAS seeks evidence to confirm it.
Add to this your brain’s amygdala, which processes fear and flags unfamiliar situations as threats. It’s a well-meaning but misguided mechanism, often resisting change—even if the change is positive.
Finally, your brain’s dopamine system plays a role. Comfort zones provide small dopamine hits, rewarding you for staying put. On the flip side, stepping out of that zone can temporarily decrease dopamine, making challenges feel even harder.
Understanding these mechanisms empowers you to work with your brain, rather than against it, to rewire your patterns and step into growth with intention.
The Subconscious Traps Keeping You Stuck
Your subconscious is powerful—but it’s also where self-sabotage thrives. Let’s break down some common traps:
1. Fear of Failure (or Success)
Fear of failure stops you from taking risks. Equally sneaky, fear of success can paralyze you with worries about added responsibility or scrutiny.
2. Negative Self-Talk
Beliefs like "I’m not good enough" or "I always mess up" create a self-fulfilling cycle. They aren’t truths, but your subconscious treats them as if they are.
3. Comfort Zone Illusions
Staying in your comfort zone feels safe, but it’s where growth stagnates. You might dream of big changes while subconsciously clinging to familiar routines.
Recognizing these traps is the first step to breaking free. By confronting them, you can reframe your mindset and move toward progress.
5 Science-Backed Steps to Break Free and Move Forward
Here’s a roadmap to overcoming stuckness:
1. Identify Patterns Journal or track the triggers of your stuck moments. Science shows that naming emotions activates the prefrontal cortex, helping you regulate them and gain control. I personally didn't journal pen to paper when I got stuck but thought about it a lot and was very aware of my thoughts all the time trying to dig deep into what was going on and I encourage you to do the same.
2. Rewire Your Subconscious The super necessary and ongoing work needed to remove these neural networks permenantly and create better ones.
Tools like affirmations, visualization, and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) can reprogram negative patterns.
EFT, in particular, reduces cortisol and forms new neural pathways, and is personally my FAVOURITE method of subconcious rewiring. I spoke about this on my first podcast episode and I will dive much more into EFT and my experiences with it - so subscribe to the newsletter so you don't miss out of future chats on this!
3. Create Micro-Actions Break goals into bite-sized steps. For example, instead of “Write a blog post,” start with “confirm blog post title.”
This strategy taps into dopamine’s reward system, reducing resistance.
4. Disrupt the Cycle Shake up routines by introducing novelty. I swapped fiction audiobooks for personal development ones which allowed me to break the neural pathway while still maintaining a relatively similar habit.
I also focused more strongly on wellness supplements, which boosted my energy and outlook.
5. Build Momentum Celebrate every win—no matter how small. These celebrations create a positive feedback loop, reinforcing progress and building confidence.
If you want to look further into a really cool concept the book The Gap And The Gain, again by Dan Sullivan and Dr Benjamin Hardy is a great read and fantastic way of looking at your past accomplishments!
Conclusion
Feeling stuck can feel overwhelming, but it’s not permanent—and it’s certainly not a sign of failure. It’s your brain’s way of protecting you, even if the results don’t serve your goals.
By understanding the subconscious forces at play and applying strategies like identifying patterns, tapping through blocks, and embracing micro-actions, you can unlock the progress you’ve been craving.
Change happens one step at a time, and every small win brings you closer to the life you deserve. So, whether you’re journaling to uncover hidden triggers or celebrating a micro-action with a cup of tea, remember: breaking free is a journey—and you’re already on the right path.
